ROUNDHILL ROMP

The Roundhill Romp always claims a few scalps. This year it was more than metaphorical, with several bloodied heads and bodies waiting for attention at the ambulance ranks, including several Flyers. Dan probably doesn’t blame his asthma attack on the rigours of the route. Just as well Karen had a spare inhaler though! The course did play a part in Steve CY’s ankle sprain, Stella’s header into thorns and flint on the wooded return section and Jackie’s three point landing. Stella sustained multiple grazes and bruises which she told me looked much worse than they felt and were restored by John’s strong tea. Jackie recovered well enough to do the Climping social run two days later. All four finished well. It is a hazardous course, this year made more so with the beautiful evening’s dazzling, low, blinding light. Steyning painstakingly painted white lines on every tree root, but keeping footing remains tricky. Apart from restricting the numbers, which may help marginally, there is little more that Steyning can do to improve safety on this demanding, scenic and popular race. I guess we all know what we let ourselves in for as multi terrain runners.

The Roundhill field grows in number each year, and it is clear that it was targeted for maximum effort by the big clubs. The top six in the race all fielded more than twenty five, I am sure the highest since the WSFR League formed 26 years ago, and 4 clubs scoring more than 81 points is pretty unusual. The field of 470 had a quality of runners higher than the norm as well, making point scoring significantly more difficult. Our 10 and 9 pointers certainly had to work hard for them! Flyers good 81 gave us fourth on the night and we unsurprisingly slipped 3 points behind Steyning on their home patch. A long way to go and still all to play for.

Keith got to the start with a few minutes to spare and ran a storming race; Nadine too had another excellent run followed by Jan; Dan had to battle with his breathing and did remarkably well; whilst Steve, Adrian and Chris packed well for their 9 points. It was an evening of Flyer’s firsts! Welcome Andy C and Jemma for their first race with us; James to his first for a few years; Jack and Andrew S to their first WSFRL race; and John K to his first this year! We hope you make it a habit! Another first was Jill finishing last Flyer, but as she had a broken arm it was pretty brave even to start on this course!

In the U15 race Leah and Nina had excellent runs. It is a tough challenge for our Flyers juniors to compete with girls and boys considerably older than themselves, but Leah continues to take this in her stride, with a very good overall 17th for 8 points. Nina is even younger, and once again ran extremely well to finish 35th for 6 points. The two girls have quite different but very effective styles and are clearly natural athletes. What will you both be like when you are 15?! Still enjoying it, we hope.

TILGATE FOREST

Steve and Robin on the finish straight at Tilgate

With 38 in the race, Flyers were back into top gear for the Tilgate 5, at Crawley K2, which is an excellent venue for a race which starts and finishes on the track, and in between provides a quite challenging undulating route on sometimes tricky woodland tracks. Thankfully the sun wasn’t as hot on the exposed s andy stretches as it has been.

There were many excellent performances. Keith M was a very good 4th and Phil followed him in 5th, after a brief stop to tie his lace! Also in the front group scoring maximums were Dan, Liz and Nadine. Adrian and Steve K were in great form too. John B managed to finish in spite of a calf tear, and Heather returned well, if a little apprehensive after her broken arm!

The Tilgate 5 was Trevor and Kevin’s 10th Anniversary of joining the Flyers, which began the Crawley Flyer’s contingent. This has been so important for the club in all respects. It was good to see that we were able to help out our Saints and Sinners friends, with Donna, Kevin and Jeremy marshalling.

OXFAM TRAILWALKER

12:45:02!

Congratulations to Ivan Bertram, John Kirk, Ed Warner and Carlo Resta! Running as the 'Enstar Flyers', they destroyed their 2006 record time for the Oxfam Trailwalker on July 19th. They had a superb run to complete the 100km (62 mile) course in 12 hours 45 minutes (average pace 12 mins 20 secs per mile), 2 hours and 5 minutes faster than their previous record. They also raised over £2,000 for Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

They were 7th overall, and 2nd civilian team. The other five teams ahead of them were all Gurkhas. Unfortunately the first civilian team home were also vets, so they took the vets record.

The 2007 record time (held by Surrey Fire Service) was 14 hours 7 minutes, so our plan was to do the race in 13 hours 30 minutes. To achieve this, our strategy was for the team to run light, carrying nothing, and not to stop at all. This is how the Gurkhas do it, and it works for them!

So we had a team of brilliant support runners: Keith Gardner, Steve Clough- Young, Andy Holley, Kerry Neal, Jan Ireland, Terry Roberts, Andrew Selman (who ran three legs!) and Nadine Kelsey (who nursed Ivan through the last leg!). The support runners carried food, drink and essential kit, and were responsible for ensuring the team ate and drank according to their pre-planned schedule. They also provided vital encouragement and motivation. Without the support runners, it would have been simply impossible to complete the race in such a fast time, so a great big THANK YOU! to you all.

In the end, the team beat the 2007 record time by 1 hour 22 minutes, and their target time by 45 minutes, which is a fantastic achievement. For most of us, it's hard to imagine the reserves of mental and physical endurance that are necessary to run 62 miles non-stop, and as a bystander watching it unfold, I was massively impressed. It was a really exciting day, and one I think all those involved will remember for a long time. Jeremy

2nd Civilian Team: Brilliant!

The curry was good too...
